Phase 3: Shipboard Placements & On-the-Job Learning
Timing varies • Partner Vessels & Operators
Phase 3 is where you step on board as a working member of an expedition team. Building on Phases 1 and 2, participants who successfully complete both phases will be placed on one paid expedition with a partner operator.
Placements can be with any compatible operator—including, but not limited to, Adventure Canada—and depend on the timing, itineraries, needs, and capacity of each company. Dates, vessel, and route will vary, but in every case you are joining as staff, not as a trainee.
At the end of your Phase 3 voyage, it is up to you and the operator whether to continue on further contracts.
Where you’ll be
-
Location: On board an expedition cruise or marine vessel with a partner operator
-
Timing: Varies by operator and itinerary
-
Accommodation: You will live on board as crew, sharing staff areas and facilities, and working within the ship’s schedule and routines.
Before your placement begins, you’ll receive information about the operator, vessel, approximate dates, travel arrangements, and your expected role.

What Phase 3 covers
Phase 3 focuses on learning by doing in real expedition and marine environments. Depending on your placement and qualifications, your onboard experience may include:
-
Team Integration & Ship Life
-
Joining daily staff or crew briefings
-
Participating in safety drills and following shipboard procedures
-
Learning how different departments (bridge, hotel, expedition, deck, etc.) work together
-
-
Guest Experience & Interpretation
-
Supporting presentations, cultural programs, and informal learning
-
Hosting guests in public spaces, during meals, and around the vessel
-
Applying Inuit knowledge and leadership in how stories, places, and histories are shared
-
-
Field & Landing Support
-
Assisting with Zodiac operations and landings (within your training and the operator’s policies)
-
Helping manage guest movement, basic safety, and group flow on shore
-
Observing and learning from experienced expedition team members
-
-
Professional Growth
-
Receiving guidance and feedback from mentors and supervisors on board
-
Seeing how your certifications and skills translate into real roles
-
Gaining a clearer picture of possible career paths in expedition cruising and marine work
-
Every placement will look a little different, but the goal is the same: to give Inuit participants meaningful, structured experience in real operational settings.
What Phase 3 does not cover
To keep expectations clear:
-
Phase 3 does not provide multiple or full-season contracts by default.
-
Nalunaiqsijiit supports one paid expedition placement for those who complete Phases 1 and 2. Any further work is negotiated directly between you and the operator.
-
Roles are not identical across operators. Duties, schedules, and specific expectations will differ from ship to ship and company to company.
-
It is not a custom-designed role or a shadow-only experience; operators will place you where you can contribute meaningfully within their existing team structure.

Pay, training allowance & funding
All Phase 3 positions are paid roles:
-
You are hired for your placement by the operator, at that company’s rate of pay and under their employment policies.
-
Pay rates will vary between companies and may vary between roles.
Nalunaiqsijiit does not provide an additional training allowance for Phase 3.

Details on travel, pay, contract terms, and onboard conditions will be confirmed with you before you commit to a placement.
